Tahiti Guide: Top 3 Things to Do

Many people miss the opportunity to discover the island of Tahiti and they stay only for a transfer in Papeete. In our view it’s a mistake. The island has a lot to offer that you should not mission on your trip to French Polynesia. Her is our top 3 best things to do in Tahiti:

  1. Teahupo’o

Surfer paddling out to the Teahupoo wave

Teahupo’o or ‘the end of the road’, is the last village that you can reach by car on the less populated side of the island, Tahiti Nui. This means it’s a very remote location, offering a tranquil and amazing landscapes. Not to mention it is home to one if not the most famous surfing waves: Teahupo'o where only the most experienced surfers ride. It was also the home of the Paris Olympics in 2024.

The fun thing is that you can rent a taxi boat and your experienced skipper takes you right next to the extremely powerful waves, that all surfers treat with respect.

2. Market in Papeete

Papatee is the only real town in Polynesia and it has a relatively big market. It’s not very touristy so you can discover authentic Polynesian foods and clothing here. The local dish that you cannot miss to try is the poisson cru which is raw fresh tuna with coconut milk, a specialty that everyone loves in Polynesia. It’s delicious!

3.Sunsets

Sunset in Tahiti with view of Moorea island.

During our 2 weeks in Polynesia we had the best sunsets in Tahiti. The sun produced colors ranging from golden, to deep blue every single night. On the western side you can also see Moorea island right next to the sun hiding under the ocean.
